When the qualities of current soil are insufficient to meet the intended criteria, ground improvement is required. Environmental worries over dwindling natural resources have also pushed ground modification techniques to the forefront. Ground modification techniques are being used to restore land.
To enhance the lateral stiffness of piles and therefore minimize the quantity of steel reinforcement necessary, a combined solution of ground improvement and piling works can be undertaken.
This technique is based on the optimal distribution of loads between the inclusion and the surrounding soil. Inclusions are installed using a specialized boring tool and then filled with concrete. The diameter of these columns is between 250- and 450-mm. Concrete is injected from the bottom to the top to ensure the continuity of the concrete process. This method is suitable ground bearing foundations, environmentally sustained solutions, optimization of concrete and steel quantities used.
Stone columns are used, like most ground improvement strategies, to minimize settling and increasing the load-bearing power. They also accelerate soil consolidation because of the drainage capacity of the granular materials in the columns which act as pore or water weight clearing focuses. Stone columns are especially effective in improving slope stability and stopping liquefaction by increasing shear strength at intervals within the soil.
One or even more fluid jets with high kinetic energy are used to split apart and blend the ground with a slurry of liquid cement to create a layer of "soil concrete"
